3 interesting facts about Gabo in Cartagena

Zapata Olivella House

The Zapata Olivella family lived on Espíritu Santo Street. There, Gabriel García Márquez met the writer and physician Manuel Zapata Olivella, with whom he forged a close friendship. It was Zapata Olivella who motivated him to join the editorial team of the nascent newspaper "El Universal," marking a crucial turning point in his career as a journalist and writer.

La Cueva

This iconic restaurant and bar was one of Gabriel García Márquez's first retreats in Cartagena, the very night he arrived in the city. Fascinated by the personality of the place's owner, he used it as inspiration to bring Catarino to life in "One Hundred Years of Solitude."

Trinidad Square

Located in the heart of Getsemaní, this square witnessed Gabriel García Márquez's first experiences in Cartagena. In " Vivir para Contarla," he recalls the nights in the neighborhood in 1948, when he was 21 years old and immersed himself in the joy of its festivities.
